Join Liberty Lake's First Bike Bus!

A fun, free, and safe way for kids to bike to school together

Join us on the next bike bus:

Date: Thursday, October 16th
Time: TBD
Starting Point: Rocky Hill Park, Liberty Lake, WA
Schools: Liberty Creek Elementary & Liberty Lake Elementary

What is a Bike Bus?

A bike bus is like a school bus, but with bikes! Led by adult volunteers, groups of children cycle to school together along a set route, picking up more riders at designated "stops" along the way. It's safe, social, and gets kids active before school.

Your child will:

  • Start their day with exercise and fresh air
  • Build confidence cycling in a group
  • Make new friends from their school
  • Arrive at school energized and ready to learn

Perfect for Late-Start Thursdays

We know Thursday's late start can be challenging for working parents. Drop your child at Rocky Hill Park or at one of our designated intersection stops, and our trained volunteers will safely guide them to school. Turn a scheduling challenge into an adventure!

How It Works

  1. Drop Off: Bring your child to Rocky Hill Park or a designated stop
  2. Ride Together: Kids join the bike bus with adult supervision
  3. Safe Arrival: We deliver your child directly to their school
  4. Have Fun: Kids enjoy a healthy, social start to their day

Safety First

  • Led by experienced adult cyclists
  • Volunteer marshals at busy intersections
  • Predetermined safe route
  • All children must wear helmets
  • Safety briefing before departure

What Your Child Needs

A working bicycle*
Properly fitted helmet (required)*
Weather-appropriate clothing
Water bottle
Excitement for adventure!

*Eventually these will be something Cycling On Purpose will be able to provide and offer kids as part of this program

We Need Volunteers!

Help make this inaugural bike bus a success! We're looking for:

  • 2-4 Ride Leaders: Cycle with the group (one leading, one trailing to make sure no one gets left behind, and a couple riding with the "peloton")
  • 2-4 Intersection Marshals: Help holding traffic at key crossings along the route

If you'd like to volunteer, check a box to be a volunteer when you register your child for the bike bus.

Bike Bus FAQ's

Is this really free? Yes! This is a community initiative by Cycling On Purpose to promote active transportation and build community.

What if my child is a beginner cyclist? Children should be comfortable riding their bike for about 1 mile at a relaxed pace. We keep a steady, manageable speed (about 5 mph) suitable for elementary-age riders.

What happens if it rains? We'll make a weather call by [time] on Thursday morning and notify all registered families via email/text.

Will this happen again? Yes! We plan to host at least one more bike bus before year-end and at least every 3rd Thursday of each month next Spring. Join us to show demand for regular bike buses!

Why is capacity limited to 10-12 riders? Because this is our first bike bus, we want to ensure we have a group that can easily be managed by the volunteers. We'll be learning from the first two bike bus events so we can plan and iterate over the winter to be able to scale it to a higher capacity.

About Cycling On Purpose

Cycling On Purpose is a Liberty Lake-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering resilient youth and teens through the power of purpose and meaning in their lives. We believe (and research has proven it) that things like cycling, exercise, and being outdoors plays an important role in improving mental health and building resiliency in kids and teens (and adults, too).

Founded by Travis Scott, who made headlines in the summer of 2025 by cycling over 2,500 miles form Spokane to Indianapolis (where he grew up) to raise awareness for youth mental health, our organization believes that bikes and a connection to nature and the outdoors can be powerful tools for building confidence, fostering friendships, and improving wellbeing.

We're working to create a healthier, more connected community by getting kids active and engaged through cycling and other outdoor initiatives. The bike bus program represents our commitment to making these activities accessible and fun—combining physical activity, being outdoors, social connection, and practical transportation solutions for local families.

At Cycling On Purpose, we know that small actions can create big changes. Every pedal stroke, every morning ride, and every new friendship formed on the bike bus contributes to building resilient, confident kids who are better equipped to face life's challenges.

When kids start their day with exercise, fresh air, and community, they arrive at school ready to learn and thrive.

Our bike bus is just the beginning. We're building a movement that shows how simple solutions—like riding bikes together—can address complex challenges facing today's youth.
